The girls high school basketball regular season has two games left. Here is what’s on the line in every area district as the season draws to a close:
Note: Corrects 10-A Div. II where there was forfeit I’d not heard about:
Teams in: Rider, Denton Guyer, Byron Nelson, Azle.
What’s up: All four playoff spots have been claimed. Rider and Guyer will battle it out for first. The Lady Raiders are in first but must face Azle and Guyer. Rider can get at least share of district title with win Friday. But to win it outright, it’ll have to beat Guyer on the road Tuesday.
Teams in: Burkburnett, Hirschi, Graham.
What’s up: I’m counting Graham in because even if it loses out – and with leaders Burkburnett and Hirschi on the schedule, that’s a decent possibility – 3-5 gets the Lady Blues in with head-to-head sweep of Iowa Park. If both win out, Burkburnett and Hirschi will tie for first and have to play a third time or flip for seeding. More than likely, IP and Vernon will play next Tuesday to determine final berth.
Teams in: Bowie, Nocona.
What’s up: Bowie has claimed district and Nocona is in because at worst, the Lady Indians will finish 5-5. And with 3-5 Jacksboro and Holliday still havinmg to play, Nocona can’t be passed by two teams. So it’s City View (4-4), Holliday and Jacksboro fighting for two spots. The Lady Mustangs could clinch a berth by beating Holliday tonight.
3-A Div. I
Teams in: Wellingon, Wheeler.
What’s up: Wellington is district champ and the No. 2 seed is Wheeler. The last spot comes down between Quanah and Shamrock. If there are no upsets, those will tie at 3-5 and have to have a play-in. Quanah beat Shamrock 38-37 on Tuesday in what was a must-win.
9-A Div. I
Teams in: Hamlin.
What’s up: Albany is basically in as well at 6-2 but I think there could still be a situation where it doesn’t if it loses out. Which is what Munday needs to happen. The Mogulettes are tied with Haskell at 4-4, but were swept by the Maidens. Unless Munday upsets 7-1 Hamlin tonight, it’ll likely finish 5-5 and lose out on a tiebreaker.
10-A Div. I
Teams in: Windthorst
What’s up: Windthorst, which lost its first district game on Tuesday to Archer City, can clinch district with one more win. On the surface, the three-way tie for second between Archer City, Petrolia and Seymour looks complicated. But I don’t think it will be. Archer City has the two last-place teams left on the schedule so there’s a good chance it wins out and takes second. Petrolia and Seymour play that last week. If the Lady Panthers knock off Windthorst tonight, then the winner in that finale gets third. If not, Seymour would need to win to tie Petrolia (which should beat Olney tonight) and then there’d be a playoff for third.
10-A Div. II
Who’s in: Crowell, Northside, Knox City.
What’s up: All playoff spots are spoken for. Northside is at 7-1 and Crowell and Knox City are at 6-2 because the Lady Wildcats had to forfeit a game to Knox CIty because of an ineligible player. So as long as Northside wins out, it wins district. And Crowell plays Knox City Tuesday to determine second place.
11-A Div. II
Who’s in: Newcastle, Graford, Throckmorton
What’s up: Newcastle clinched district by beating Graford Tuesday. If Graford beats Throckmorton tonight, then it clinches second place.
21-A Div. II
Who’s in: Saint Jo, Slidell
What’s up: Bellevue is basically in as well – as the Lady Eagles need to do is win one of their final two games or have Forestburg lose (they play district leader Saint Jo tonight). Saint Jo clinches district with a win.
