Updated QB situations and 2nd scrimmages

We’re getting close to only having one week remaining until the 2013 high school football season begins.

Before I mention this week’s scrimmages, I figured it couldn’t hurt to update a couple of the QB battles going on. Unless someone is not telling me something, it looks like there’s only one area team that will enter Week 0 still playing two people.

* Vernon – David Garza will be the guy. Coach Bateman was really impressed with his leadership and is expecting great things from the senior.

* Holliday – It’s looking like it’s going to be junior Matthew Tigert. Coach Johnson did say sophomore Levi Draper will get on the field somewhere for the Eagles. He doesn’t like calling up a sophomore to varsity and then not playing him at all.

* Olney – Coach Farmer told me today that the battle between Taylor Thomas and Lane Spivey will go right into the opener against City View. They’re two different kinds of QBs and he likes what both bring to the table.

Technically, I expect Hirschi to play two QBs as well just like they did last year – Terrance Cooper and Rico Shumpert. So I guess that’s two teams going the 2-QB route, but the Huskies using both shouldn’t come as a surprise since they did that all last year.

Speaking of Hirschi, it’ll scrimmage Henrietta at Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday night. Sounded like the Huskies had a lot of good things happen the other day and if they can build on that heading into the season, that would give them some confidence heading into the opener at Bowie.

Most everyone else scrimmages Thursday night (because of in-service, no Thursday morning scrimmages). There are a handful of Friday scrimmages.

For Rider and WFHS, their only scrimmage opportunity this preseason takes place Friday. I’ll probably head out to Memorial Stadium to check out the No. 10 Raiders.WFHS faces Snyder in Clyde.
