AP rankings and my thoughts

Below is the Associated Press’ preseason high school football poll that came out today. Our own Andy Newberry is a voter, one of 25 in the state.

Polls don’t mean a whole bunch, but they’re always interesting to look at. Two weeks from today, the games will finally start counting.

Others receiving votes: 11, Chilton 30. 12, Falls City 16. 13, Albany 14. 14, Pineland West Sabine 11. 14, Bosqueville 11. 16, Hubbard 9. 17, Muenster 8. 17, Burton 8. 19, Ganado 3. 19, Goldthwaite 3. 19, Italy 3. 22, New Deal 2. 23, Frost 1.

So here are my thoughts:

* Rider and Graham are ranked about where they should be. Like Windthorst was last year, Munday’s rank is pretty much based on what it has accomplished in the past. I don’t think the Moguls are the ninth-best team in Class A, not with how much they lost.

* Munday will have a chance to prove its ranking quickly, though. The Moguls open against Windthorst and then travel to No. 5 Stamford. If they start out 2-0, then Munday will deserve its Top 10 ranking.

* No area teams are receiving votes, which means it’ll take a few weeks for anyone else from the area to crack the Top 10.

* Defending state champs occupy three of the five No. 1 spots – Allen (5A), Denton Guyer (4A) and Stephenville (3A). Mart (A) lost to Stamford in the A Div. I title game and Newton (2A) was ousted in the 2A Div. I semifinals in 2012.

* Denton Guyer (17) and Allen (14) had the most first-place votes. Mart had the least with eight. In fact, No. 2 Tenaha had two more first-place votes. The Tigers have faced Munday in the past two Div. II title games and I bet they win it all in 2013.

* There are three area games that will involve two ranked teams: Munday at Stamford is Sept. 6; Abilene Wylie at Graham is Sept. 13 (really excited about that one); and Denton Guyer at Rider on Oct. 25.

* Both Guyer and Rider have very tough non-district schedules. But if both can emerge unscathed and take care of business in 5-4A, that Oct. 25 gam will be a likely showdown between top 5 teams.

* Two other area teams will face ranked squads – Olney (Anson) and Quanah (Wellington). The Skyrockets are No. 6 in A after losing to Munday twice in the semis.
