Predictions for Week 1

It’s the second week of the football season, and there’s a few intriguing games out there that I’m looking forward to see how they turn out.

The results in Week 0 offer hints of what to expect from certain teams in 2010, but there’s still a lot that’s unclear. Like was Petrolia’s seven-turnover fiasco a fluke, or were the Pirates still figuring out the kinks in Coach Cook’s offense? How good is Munday? How will Holliday look against a Breckenridge team that now has confidence playing at the 2A level? Are Vernon and Hirschi better than last year?

It still may take some time to find out those answers, but for now, I’m forced to make this week’s predictions on what I saw/heard last week. Here we go:

Lawton MacArthur at WFHS – I saw enough speed and execution to make me think WFHS will be hard to stop when it has the ball. Lawton Mac supposedly has a great group of skill players too (Oklahoma starts the season this week, so they’re an unknown right now), which is what you need to match up with the Coyotes. The WFHS defense still needs some work, but I think that extra game and home-field advantage will be the difference. Look for this to end in a shootout. I’ll guess at least 70 points scored.

Rider at Kennedale — Just because Kennedale is a 3A team, doesn’t mean a Rider win. Kennedale demolished Denison on the road last week, rushing for a ton of yards. Cooper was able to have a big night against Rider’s defense, and Rider’s offense is not where it wants to be yet. Kennedale is the pick.

Ponder at Hirschi — Coach Searcy most likely won this game when he scheduled it last year. Ponder is a heck of a basketball town, but this is there first year in varsity football. A decent Class A team (Muenster) beat Ponder by three touchdowns last week. You can’t say this very often, but Hirschi could not play well and still come out ahead. I’m betting a double-digit win for the Huskies.

Pilot Point at Iowa Park — The Hawks are off to a good start, but Pilot Point is a tougher test than Pampa. If IP can force turnovers and convert them into touchdowns again, I like their chances. But the Bearcats are probably not happy with losing last week and giving up 50 points. I think Pilot Point pulls out a close game.

Graham at Brownwood — Last year’s matchup was a classic. This year’s matchup could very well be a rout. The Lions will win big.

Burkburnett at Bridgeport – The Bulls had the Bulldogs’ number the last couple years, and I see no reason for that to change Friday. Bridgeport has an explosive offense that should be able to find the same weaknesses in Burkburnett’s secondary that WFHS did.

Altus at Vernon — Just like the WFHS game, Altus is a big unknown at this point. But I do know this. I chose Vernon in the paper in last year’s rivalry game, and the Lions got beat pretty good. So I’ll side with Altus.

Bowie vs. Childress — Should be a close game. The Bobcats aren’t as strong as they have been, but it’s one of those matchups I could see going either way. I’ll side with Bowie because I liked how QB Aaron Chokas had a big night last week.

Holliday at Breckenridge — I have to choose the Eagles here. They’ve won 20 straight road games and they looked dang good against Windthorst last week. But this game won’t come easy. The Buckaroos, with Coach Freeman (previously of Brownwood) running the ship, aren’t going to be a pushover at home.

Henrietta at Paradise — Hard to believe Henrietta lost last week after forcing six turnovers. That’s tough to do. I think the Bearcats are probably ticked off with how last week ended, and I think they rebound this Friday.

Jacksboro at Godley — I like the Tigers this year, and from what I’ve heard, they might even challenge for the district title. But Godley is one of the best teams in the state — Godley will win big.

Perrin-Whitt at City View — Mustangs won this going away last year, and I think City View is even better this year. So you can probably figure out who I’ll pick.

Muenster vs. Nocona – The Indians need to bounce back after a 40-point loss last week. But Muenster is a pretty scrappy Class A school, and I think they win.

Archer City at Petrolia — I’m not ready to jump ship on the Pirates yet, but I think they’ll lose this game. The Wildcats looked real good against a tougher opponent in Haskell last week.

Olney at Munday — The Moguls, I can assure you, are really wanting to get back out there and prove last Friday was a fluke. I covered this game last year, and Munday just had way too much speed for the Cubs to handle. Maybe if Reed Mankins was healthy I’d side with the Cubs. But I have to go with Munday.

Lubbock Christian at Seymour — If you can beat Jacksboro on the road, you can beat Lubbock Christian at home.

Quanah vs. Hamlin — I liked what the Indians did last week, but Hamlin is a lot tougher. If Quanah wins this one, I’ll be a full-blown believer that a district title is possible. But I like the Pied Pipers here.

Electra vs. Memphis — The Tigers might not have anyone as dynamic as Quanah’s Roderick Woodard — who torched Memphis for 216 yards — but they have a good little backfield and a big offensive line. Electra pulls this one out.

WFHS JV at Windthorst — Not going to lie. I don’t have a clue how good the Coyotes’ JV is. And I know Windthorst is banged up. But the reason I’m going with the Trojans is because back when Windthorst played the Rider JV (one of those years Shavodrick Beaver and Jurrel Thompson were on that team), Windthorst crushed them both times. So I’ll side with history and the Trojans.
